My girls and I were talking about all of our daughter’s names last night on text…and one dubbed them “the new, modernized American girl collection.” It made me laugh…but it is SO true.
Here’s the rundown of my best friend’s daughter’s names that were born in 2011-2013:
Some are still traditional, but lots of them are NOT, including my own child.
Mary McMclaughlin (Mary Mac), Annie, Mary Brooks, Harper, Collins, Lochlan, Kemper, Saylor and Piper. But, seriously…….. Collins, Lochlan, Kemper, Saylor and Piper?!? It’s a WHOLE new generation folks. Out of those last 5 that are “different names”, Kemper is the only family name…the rest of ours are just random!
It got me thinking about how names come and go and how each generation has certain names that are popular…so I looked them up just for fun.
20’s: Ruth, Mary, Dorothy (I think I have a great aunt Ruth and aunt Mary from all 4 grandparents….)
50’s: Linda, Susan, Barbara (Susan is my mother in law’s name)
60-70’s: Lisa, Michelle, Kimberly
80’s: Jennifer, Jessica, Ashley
90’s: Sarah, Emily, Samantha
2000’s: Sophia, Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Ava
*Mary was the MOST popular name in the US from 1913-1946.
*Jennifer took the reins from 1970-1984.
*Jessica and Ashley split the title from 85’-95’
*Emily was it from 1996-2007.
So, suffice to say if you are named Mary, Jennifer, Jessica, Ashley, or Emily…you are NOT alone. *And in the south you can see people still LOVE the name Mary…they just add a second name to it*
This was all just pretty interesting to me. I can’t wait to see what the most popular names are from 2010-2020. I have a feeling they will be way different than any of these. The only downside to all these fun, non-traditional names are these crazy people who give all these WACKY spellings…I’m just NOT on board with that. But, whatever…not my child.
So there's your history lesson for the day brought to you by the social security office:-)
Do y'all like traditional? Family? Or different?
Xoxo
We went original... My son's name is Stryker. Stryker Evan (at least he can fall back on his middle name if in the future he doesn't like his first :) )
ReplyDeleteThis is a big reason why we chose a different family name for our little girl! Growing up one of the billion "Ashleys" is not as fun. :) Case in point, my best friend is also an Ashley. Go figure!
