If you read my previous post regarding my 35 week update you probably know how this all unfolded.
Anyways... This is the story of how we met our boys.
Like I said earlier, on my 35 week appointment my BP was up for the first time. My doc wasn't overly worried at that point hoping it was my cold medicine doing it... But I went back that Friday and it was even higher... Womp womp. Thank goodness the doc at that time wrote me a RX to get rid of the cold, it was the sickest I have ever been from a head cold... I coughed so much i strained a muscle in my stomach. Ouch. That was especially nice with a c section recovery. Ugh. Anyways.... I was basically forced to rest all weekend Bc of how bad I felt and I was due back at doctor on TUESDAY JULY 1 for my 36 week appointment.
I worked all day Monday and half day Tuesday until my appointment... I felt so much better from the head cold I wasn't as focused on the BP, it was just nice to feel kinda normal.
Sooooo, anyways my appointment on Tuesday was at 2. And I got there and my BP was 175/109. Cue panic attack. HOLY!!! Way higher than it has ever been. So scary. I was sent to ultrasound for them to perform another biophysical profile on the boys (they looked great!)and then to the lab for some tests. I had protein in my urine (signs of preeclampsia) and that coupled with the high BP was bad news. I knew it. BUT, I still wasn't prepared for the words that came out of my doctors mouth "you are getting wheeled to the hospital, you can't go anywhere with that BP." Holy shit!!!! What?!?! Of course a breakdown occurred, it's only natural. We had NOTHING packed. Like, not a damn thing. We just figured if my BP was high again they'd at least let us go home and get our stuff and come back.... Kinda like with Collins. FALSE. We had to rely on my mom to bring everything, Lordy!! Talking about stressful!
So, we get to the hospital around 4 and they get the ball rolling immediately. Like, I had to ask for five minutes to call my mom and gather my thoughts. I definitely didn't have much time to contemplate what was happening. Probably for the best. I was wheeled back to the operating room around 5:30 ish and the boys entered this world at 6:17 and 6:18 pm on July 1. It was all so surreal.
Of course my main concern was for Graham and Thomas and whether they would be okay coming early. I knew NICU may happen but had hoped not. When they first came out the doctor and nurses said the boys looked great and they were headed to nursery! Awesome news! Well, unfortunately once they got there Thomas started breathing too fast and they whisked him away to NICU:-( I had no idea until I was in recovery and I finally got the nurses to call my family so someone could come keep me company. Mikey had headed to NICU with Thomas. The next several hours were a complete blur, I was given a magnesium drip to help with the BP and that put me out of it! I was wheeled to the NICU that night to see Thomas and I barely remember being there, so that stinks.
It's funny that Thomas was the bigger twin but yet had to be in NICU. The docs said that's actually pretty normal for twins. We stayed in the hospital for four nights which was actually nice as we weren't in a rush to leave one baby there.
The whole NICU ordeal is a story for another day, but we were so excited when we FINALLY got the call to come get Thomas on Friday July 11 after 10 long nights in the NICU. Our family of five was finally able to go home together! Best feeling in the world!!
So incredibly thankful for these babies and a big sister who loves them so much!
